Evo Supplies make PINK furniture skates in support of Prevent Breast Cancer

BCL Office Moves pink Evo personalised skates Prevent Breast Cancer

When we took our furniture skate trade stand to the Movers & Storers Show last November, we offered our sought-after annual “Show Skate” as the prize in a raffle to raise funds for the Show’s chosen charity for 2018: Prevent Breast Cancer.

Visitors and fellow exhibitors responded magnificently, and over the two days of the Show we raised a total of £152 for Prevent Breast Cancer.

The lucky winner was Peter Sturt of Bespoke Bodies.

The 2018 Britain’s Strongest Mover competition at the Movers & Storers Show involved contestants pulling one of BCL Office Moving‘s bright pink 7.5-tonne trucks over a 40m distance, while wearing pink tutus. It was quite a sight to behold!

Congratulations to Simon Beck, our removal man who came in second place in the Britain's Strongest Mover contest at the Movers & Storers show! Our truck was used for the truck pull portion of the contest – wrapped in a tutu in honor of Prevent Breast Cancer charity (@WeArePreventBreastCancer) and the men all wore tutus during the event! Here's a video of Simon pulling the truck!

More about Prevent Breast Cancer

Prevent Breast Cancer is the only UK charity funding ground-breaking research solely aimed at preventing breast cancer for future generations.

Predict. Prevent. Protect. This is the charity’s mantra. As the only UK charity entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer, Prevent Breast Cancer is committed to freeing the world from the disease altogether. Unlike many cancer charities, it’s focused on preventing, rather than curing. Promoting early diagnosis, screening and lifestyle changes to stop the problem before it starts.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Prevent Breast Cancer is passionate about stopping the disease before it starts, and collaborates with others to influence change in breast cancer services. We work closely with The Manchester Breast Centre to collaborate with the best experts in the field. And by being based at the UK’s only breast cancer prevention centre, The Nightingale Centre, Prevent Breast Cancer is at the forefront of preventative research.

The devastating disease of breast cancer affects too many people – the patients, their families, friends and colleagues. It is a disease that can often be cured if caught early and suitable treatments are prescribed. But what if there was no need for the cure? What if people could live their lives safe in the knowledge that it would never happen to them?

Every year, in the UK, 55,000 individuals are diagnosed – that’s 150 people a day. And every year, we lose 11,400 to this disease. That’s 11,400 too many. In fact, it is 55,000 too many. If we could prevent breast cancer tomorrow, by 2027, over 550,000 would never receive a diagnosis.

The Vision

To prevent breast cancer for future generations through preventative testing, screening, lifestyle changes and drugs where needed.

The Need

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, despite it being a rare disease in men.
  • 1 in 9 women and 1 in 1000 men in the UK will develop the disease in their lifetime.
  • Across the UK, 55,000 people annually are diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Tragically 11,400 women do not survive, though survival rates are increasing.
  • In the last ten years, female incidence rates have increased by 3.6%.
  • In the UK breast cancer rates have increased by 57% in the last 30 years.
  • It is predicted that in the UK there will be 57,000 new cases per annum by 2024, an increase of 7% in 8 years.
  • Currently only 3% of all cancer research funding is spent on prevention.

Prevent Breast Cancer seed-funds medical research projects into the prediction and prevention of breast cancer – without our original funding these research projects would not happen. Once the projects have been undertaken, they can often support large grant applications to organisations such as The National Institute of Health Research.

Specific Aims

To:

  • Predict which women are most susceptible to breast cancer.
  • Diagnose the disease early through better and earlier detection methods.
  • Research and develop preventative measures for the disease.
  • Increase the uptake of breast screening in minority ethnic groups.

Objectives

To:

  • Identify women as high, medium or low risk through gene, lifestyle and breast density testing.
  • Undertake further research into high risk genes and gene fragments (SNPs).
  • Offer diet and lifestyle interventions to those deemed high-risk.
  • Increase the frequency of screening for high-risk women.
  • Improve diagnosis and treatment of pre-cancer changes.
  • Develop preventative drugs for appropriate patients.
  • Provide more accurate breast screening tools.
  • Raise awareness of the disease in minority ethnic communities.

Evoskate biscuits!

As always, we took along plenty of our delicious #evoskate biscuits, along with chocolates, pens, coasters and balloons to tempt visitors into our stand.

Top-of-the range furniture moving equpiment

But of course the main attraction was our top-of-the-range furniture moving equipment. This year’s top favourites were our ultra-heavy duty products, including piano skates and ‘Mighty Movers’.

With their giant 200mm wheels and 36mm platforms, Evo piano skates will carry up to 900kg and are ideal for moving all kinds of heavy items – not just pianos.

Evo Super Piano Skate

We came up with the idea for the Mighty Mover at the Movers & Storers Show two years ago. We were asked for an even heavier-duty version of our double-thickness skates, so we came up with a design. The resulting 1-tonne capacity skate quickly became one of our best-sellers.

Prevent Breast Cancer

The show’s charity for 2018 was Prevent Breast Cancer – selected in memory of Malcolm Halley, who died in August. We were very pleased to offer this year’s ‘Show Skate’ as the prize in a charity raffle, which raised £152 for Prevent Breast Cancer. The lucky winner was Peter Sturt of Bespoke Bodies.

“The Skate People” – The Mover magazine, June 2018

Evo Supplies furniture skate moving dollies removals Mover Magazine

We were delighted to welcome David Jordan, Deputy Editor of The Mover magazine, to our factory and warehouse in West Mersea a few weeks ago.

Here’s what he wrote after spending a morning with the Evo team:

Deputy Editor David Jordan takes a trip to Mersea Island in Essex to visit Evo Supplies, one of Britain’s leading manufacturers of furniture skates.

When I phoned Evo Supplies’ Managing Director Juliet Dunn to arrange a time for our meeting, I was a little surprised when she said, “I’ll just check the tide tables to make sure you can get across.” The company is based on Mersea Island (it’s pronounced Mersey by the way, if like me you didn’t know) and you have to cross a causeway to reach it by road. Around full moon it can be up to a metre deep in water for up to two hours, so you need to check first.

The Romans, based at the nearby garrison town of Camulodunum (Colchester), used to holiday here and developed a taste for Mersea’s oysters, even exporting them the thousand-odd miles back to Rome, in barrels filled with seawater. Oysters and other seafood delights are still enjoyed on Mersea today, by locals and tourists alike. Visit the Company Shed fishmongers/restaurant on the waterfront if you ever come here.

Having safely dodged the Blackwater tide, I arrived at Evo Supplies’ factory on a small industrial estate in West Mersea and was greeted at the door by a beaming Juliet. Over tea and chocolate biscuits she told me their story.

Juliet and her husband Greg started Evo Supplies in 2013. “It happened almost by accident,” explained Juliet. “We were renting warehouse space near here for

The skate business is competitive and Evo’s skates are not necessarily the cheapest on the market, so I asked Juliet how they have managed to grow the business.

“The personalisation of the skates is one reason, but quality is what really sets us apart,” said Juliet. “Not just of the skates themselves but the customer service that comes with them. We sell thousands of skates a year, but if anyone has a problem with one of our products, which is rare, we replace it without question or quibble. We had a few customers go elsewhere in the early years because of price, but nearly all have come back because they believe our quality and personal service is worth paying a little bit extra for.

“Since taking on the leadership of Evo full-time in 2016, I’ve been focusing on raising both our game and our profile. The annual Movers & Storers Show gives us a fantastic opportunity to showcase not just our products but our ethos to removals industry professionals, and we’re really looking forward to this year’s show in Manchester. We’re constantly adding new products to our range and improving our production processes, we’ll make pretty much any bespoke item to our customers’ specifications, and we can offer really competitive discounts on bulk orders.”

About 50% of Evo’s business is with the removals industry, with furniture retailers, Interestingly, since the Brexit vote Juliet has noticed an increase in companies specifically interested in buying British-made products.

Notwithstanding the above, at the end of 2017 Evo introduced an imported economy range, ‘Hello Dollies’. “Not every customer needs or can afford a dolly that can carry a tonne and withstand years of heavy-duty professional use, so we designed an economy range and visited China to find a manufacturer to make them exclusively for us,” said Juliet. “We’re delighted with the quality of the new products, and the sub-brand allows us to compete in the budget-priced market. However, our home-grown Evo dollies will always be at the core of our business and we are very proud to be one of the few British manufacturers producing high-quality skates for the professional removals industry.”

Juliet and Greg are keen sailors and often take part in races on the Blackwater in their boat Black Diamond. The Evo factory, offices and products are equally ship-shape and a credit to them and the enthusiastic people who work there.

“We love them”: one bespoke skate – two happy customers!

Moveitclearitfinditstoreit Evo Supplies plan chest skate

Like most small business, we love receiving positive feedback from our customers. In this case, from Matt of the wonderfully named MoveitClearitFinditStoreit in Ipswich.

Strong brand identity, a big social conscience and a passionate commitment to local customers are some of the many things that set MoveitClearitFinditStoreit apart from the rest.

We’ve been making 1-tonne capacity personalised skates for Matt for a year or so now.

A couple of months ago, we took an interesting order from one of his customers, an artist, who was looking for a bespoke wheeled platform for a large plan-chest in her studio. Here’s the result.

Matt and his team took delivery, installed it for the customer, and posted this on social media:

FANCY A SKATE?! Evo supplies make our mega moving skates/dollies, we love them, we also recommended them to a customer to make a bespoke skate for this large cabinet, check out the result, we helped place the cabinet and left one very happy customer, look after your employees backs and order a skate, they have so many uses…..but are not for the skate park 🙂 (See the original post here.)

We love these special one-off commissions. If you or your customers need something special, then do please give Evo a call on 01206 386683 or email esales@evosupplies.co.uk,  and we’ll be more than happy to help!

Take a look at some of our other bespoke commissions here. We can make pretty much any size and specifications you might require. We can advise you on loading capacity, stability and safety issues, and suggest alternative options if you’re not quite sure what you need. We keep a range of different wheels in stock, but also have access, through our suppliers, to all kinds of more specialist items.
