How To Use a Furniture Dolly

Trying to move bulky furniture without the use of a dolly is, to put it bluntly, doomed to fail. As strong as you may be, and as hard as you may struggle, you will not be able to carry a sideboard, wardrobe or cabinet without help…and that is where a furniture dolly comes in.

At Evo Supplies, we supply the muscle, thanks to our extensive range of furniture dollies which mean you can handle and move those awkward appliances without slipping a disc.  Our furniture dollies are built to last and our range includes products with four, five or six wheels which make them easily manoeuvrable.

We have a dolly for every occasion, from the standard heavy duty furniture dolly or wooden furniture dolly with replaceable rubber top, to the Big Loader five-wheeled wooden furniture dolly, the Mighty Mover or the Ultra Heavy Duty wooden furniture dolly.

Here are a few tips to using these great pieces of equipment:

1. Plan your route

Look where you are moving your piece of furniture from and to and work out the best way of getting there. You can then think of solutions in advance for difficult obstacles such as narrow stairs or sharp bends.

2. Clear away obstacles

Before setting off, make sure you clear your route of any potential trip hazards such as carpets, rugs, tables or chairs. It’s easier to do this in advance rather than when you are balancing a fridge freezer or a heavy sofa on a dolly.

3. Protect your furniture and door frames

Use blankets, towels or bubble wrap to protect your furniture – and your door frames – from scratches and dents. Secure the coverings with tape or straps to ensure they stay in place during the move, providing maximum protection.

4. Mind the gap

It is a good idea to measure the item of furniture you are moving as well as the doorways and corridors along your route to check it will fit. Having a wardrobe wedged in a corridor or staircase is not a good experience.

5. Small is beautiful

If you can disassemble your furniture, then do so. Some furniture is designed to come apart, such as a big corner sofa, so see what parts you can disconnect and move separately.

6. Remove moving parts

Cushions, throws and loose items in drawers should be removed before you set off. This will not only make the item lighter, it will also make it more stable.

7. Safe and sound

Having taken all these preliminary steps, it is now time to get your furniture on your dolly. Place the dolly as close as possible so you only have to lift the item a short way and use proper lifting techniques, such as keeping your back straight and letting your legs take the strain. Then, if you can, secure the item with straps so it doesn’t wobble or come off the dolly. You can then push your dolly to the removal van making the most of its manoeuvrability.
